Fish in the Road
Posted by 10yearsofthot on June 26, 2008
Very strange, true story. I love it when my son says, “Remember when that fish was in the road? That was weird, huh?” I had to write about it; too wild. Below for your enjoyment:
On an otherwise normal day,
I drove up to a fish in the road.
He almost blended so much with the asphalt that I didn’t see him,
This old soul, flipping and flopping,
Fighting for breath.
I sat at the stop sign,
Unable to move.
“Son, Son,” I said, “look! A fish in the road!”
“We have to save him,” he said.
And I knew this to be true.
What should I do?
I scanned the area as if to find the fisherman who dropped his load.
No one. Anywhere.
I pulled over.
It took me a long time to open the door.
With an umbrella, I nudged him,
But he was so covered with road,
I wasn’t making any progress.
“Just pick him up,” I told myself.
My eyes quickly panned to a storm drain, dripping,
It had just rained.
He was squishy and hard to hold.
I dropped him down the trash-filled drain with just enough water.
My imagination swam.
What is a fish doing in the road?
No packaging. No hook.
My son and I discussed this at length,
And when he got to school, he told everyone our tale,
For that’s what it sounded like, a tall tale.
I think it’s the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen.
I bet it’s even hard for you to believe.
